The Scarlet Letters

Unprecedented times

A crisis for me and mine

And no one knowing just what to do

Inside

A plague upon the nation

A scapegoat on the altar

Small hope that for all our years

we might not falter

Oh woe is me

All of It's so new

If only someone had taught us what to do

A world of swirling fear

With the unknown on the stoop

It's not like we have any examples we can use

If only something was written

On how best we should treat the afflicted

Some golden commandment handed down straight from above

If only as a nation

We had a great big population

Of those whose dogma centered around goodness and love

Maybe a Savior or a messiah

Whose generosity would never deny us

Who made it clear, again and again

That a judgment is moot

Someone whose track with the faithless

Might make sure you would never erase them

Who dedicated their time to the "lost" and the suffering of the few

But I'm not Him and today my judgment's on you...

Why am I so angry

Because I'm alive and you tried to erase me

When maybe I'm hungry for the love from above

but it's tough

When the most scarlet of letters is placed on my tongue

Is it A or an H for the lack of embrace

Or the G or the L that makes the heart melt

All I'm missing is U

To spell LAUGH at the fools

Okay Jesus now this is your queue

Cause I know what He did

I've read the whole script

It was in the ease of labeling difference as sin

The cross sits

And the ones that would spit

"Who are you to forgive?"

Were the ones in the pews not the pits

So please pharisees

Little Christs indeed

I learned love at His feet

And I'm telling you we need

A little help from your beliefs

That I dream you believe

The judges are the ones that forgiveness was made to free

See for all my scathing remarks and easy darts

I know kindness does stand a chance to be a part

Of what heals the divide that is separating us in part

Due to years of mistrust from the rust on moving hearts

I believe together we can sever the scars that keep us barred

And create resource chains of much needed change at large

I am holding onto the love I learned right from the start

And I need the Church right now to love hard

I know you're capable of seeing a wounded nation's healing

But it has to start with these relationships we made in bad feeling

As Jesus knew, it's between me and you, that saves really

So please show me what he came here to do

Because it would be a miracle

Seeing all the fear just go

Up from down here like lovely music from the stereo

Types of love that keep us close

I'll hold a hand to you and quote

Together we can find an end to all of that which scares us most

Please take it
